The All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) or Class 12 board exams are considered one of the most crucial exams in a student’s academic journey. Read on to know all the key details regarding the AISSCE exam.

Overview of AISSCE

The AISSCE or class 12 exams are conducted annually by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This national-level exam is taken by lakhs of 12th grade students from CBSE affiliated schools across India and abroad.

The performance in the AISSCE exams is crucial for admission into undergraduate courses in India and abroad. The exam tests students on subjects studied in grades 11 and 12 over the last two years of schooling.

Exam Pattern

Let us look at the key aspects of the AISSCE exam pattern:

Subjects

There are 5 core subjects which are compulsory for all streams – English core, physical education, economics, mathematics and an elective language. Apart from this, students have to take 3-4 subjects depending on their stream, which are:

  • Science – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Computer Science/Biotechnology
  • Commerce – Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics
  • Humanities – History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology

Question Paper Format

For most subjects, the question paper consists of two parts:

  • Part I – Objective type questions
  • Part II– Short and long answer type descriptive questions

The exam is 3 hours long for every subject with separate reading time provided before the start.

Marking Scheme

Each subject carries 100 marks overall. The division of marks between objective and subjective parts differs based on the subjects.

The grading is done on a 9-point scale with letter grades assigned.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must meet the below eligibility conditions for AISSCE:

Age Limit

There is no upper age limit. Candidates should have completed the age of 17 by 31st May of that year.

Number of Attempts Allowed

Students can appear for up to 3 consecutive attempts post their first registration in class 12.

Exam Dates

The exams are conducted in February-March every year. The exact exam schedule containing subject-wise exam dates is released by Nov/Dec by CBSE.

In 2023, the class 12 board exams will start from 15th February 2023 onwards.

Admit Card

CBSE releases the admit card online 1-2 weeks before the exam start date. Students have to carry this admit card to the exam centre along with a valid photo ID proof.

Exam Centres

The exams are held at designated test centres across India and abroad. Students have to select 4 exam city preferences at the time of registration.

CBSE tries to allocate the exam centre from among the preferred cities subject to availability.

Registration Process

The registration process commences 3-4 months prior in August-October each year. Here are the steps:

  • Parents and student’s signature images
  • Copy of birth certificate forage proof
  • Previous class 10 marksheet

Theory Syllabus

This includes chapters from NCERT textbooks prescribed for grades 11 and 12.

Practical/Internal Assessment

For science subjects, this constitutes practical exam marks and project work. Other subjects have internal assessments.

FAQs

How is the AISSCE exam score calculated?

The theory and practical marks are added for individual subjects out of 100. The overall percentage is calculated based on total marks obtained against maximum possible marks.

What is the qualifying marks for AISSCE?

Students need to obtain a minimum 33% marks overall and separately in each subject to pass the AISSCE exam.

Can I change my AISSCE exam centre after admit card release?

Yes, CBSE allows changing the exam city in case of exceptional circumstances by submitting relevant documents and fees. The request has to be made at least 10-15 days before the exam date of the concerned subject.

Is there negative marking in the AISSCE exam?

No, CBSE does not have any negative marking for incorrect answers. Students should try and attempt all questions.

Can I directly give compartment exam without taking the main exams?

No, only students who appeared in all AISSCE subjects and failed in 1 or 2 are eligible for compartmental exams.
